What Thalassa is

Thalassa Freediving is Tjaša Učakar's freediving school and club, based in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Its own framing is deliberately against the grain of a sport measured in metres and seconds: “we believe freediving is not only about metres and seconds, but above all about the feeling — about calm, lightness and that particular moment when everything under water goes quieter.” Small groups, divers the instructors know personally, and a route found for each one. Less noise, less rushing, more feeling. More water.

The stated specialism is depth equalisation: “We are specialists in depth equalisation. In our workshops we look for, and find, solutions even to the most demanding challenges that appear with depth.” For anyone who has hit a wall at 10, 20 or 30 m, that is the single most useful sentence on the site.

Pool training in Ljubljana

The pool season runs October to June with seven weekly slots. Training covers apnea swimming technique, CO₂ tolerance, extending dive times and relaxation under water, for beginners and experienced freedivers alike, with the load adapted individually.

Published slots: Tuesday 08:00–09:00 (25 m pool); Wednesday 07:00–08:00 (25 m pool, Vevče); Wednesday 13:00–14:00 (50 m pool, long distances); Thursday 20:00–21:00 and 21:00–22:00 (25 m); Friday 07:00–08:00 (25 m, statics and dynamics); Friday 08:00–09:00 (25 m). Single visit €20, a five-visit pack €85, or a monthly rate. The first session is always an introductory one, arranged by phone or email. Club membership is €35 per year.

Courses and workshops

Teaching follows the Apnea Academy didactic approach, where enjoyment and relaxation come before numbers. In winter depth training moves to the Y-40 thermal pool in Italy; in summer it goes to the sea.

Beginner course — first dives, safety, basics of technique, equalisation and breathing. No chasing metres or records: first find calm, lightness and a good feeling under water. By the end you can dive safely with a buddy. Two days, pool plus sea.

Advanced course — deeper, longer, more relaxed. Free fall and advanced equalisation techniques, fully adapted to the diver's needs. Two days.

Equalisation workshop — the house specialism. For anyone who stops at 10, 20, 30 m or deeper: Frenzel, mouthfill, dry exercises, and diagnostics following the Equalization Academy and Share Equalization methods, focused on solving the individual's specific problem. Run dry and at Y-40, with an online option.

Breathing techniques — breathwork for divers and for everyday life: calming the nervous system, working with breath-holds, cold water. A three-hour dry workshop.

Camps and trips

Camps are described as the club's favourite way of exploring depth: new locations, sea training, technique and equalisation work, and experience in varied conditions. Published trips include a Deep Week in Dahab, Egypt, 15–20 November 2026 (€850), a Y-40 weekend in Italy, 5–6 December 2026 (€320) with four dive sessions, equalisation diagnostics and the chance to test Cetma fins, and a Red Sea trip in April 2027. Summer camps run in the Kornati islands and in Greece.

Why it matters for commercial and saturation divers

Freediving is the other half of breath-hold competence, and the equalisation work in particular transfers: mouthfill, Frenzel and the diagnostics around a failing ear are the same problems a scuba or commercial diver has on a fast descent, just with less margin. Breath-hold training also builds the CO₂ tolerance and calm that make a bad moment underwater survivable. A school that treats equalisation as its specialism rather than an afterthought is rare.
