What the FSDA is

The Finnish Scientific Diving Academy is the diver training arm of Tvärminne Zoological Station, a research station of the University of Helsinki on the Baltic coast at Hanko. It trains Finnish and overseas participants to European levels of certification in scientific diving — that is, diving as a method of collecting research data, under a recognised occupational framework rather than a recreational one.

This matters because scientific diving sits in an awkward gap. It is occupational diving in the legal sense in most of Europe, but it is not commercial contracting, and its skills — transects, quadrats, photogrammetry, sample handling, archaeological recording — are not taught on a commercial diving course. Academies like the FSDA exist to fill that gap, and the European framework they certify into is the one administered through national scientific diving bodies.

Occupational Scientific Diver

The flagship programme. It prepares participants to conduct scientific research or data collection involving diving, and to run dive projects, manage dive teams and build emergency plans — the project-leader side as much as the in-water side.

Entry requirements: minimum age 18; Advanced Open Water, CMAS 2* or equivalent; 30 logged dives with proof; at least 15 dry-suit dives with proof; and a bachelor's degree, or enrolment on one, in a relevant field — or involvement with a scientific organisation. Applicants who do not yet meet every requirement are asked to outline how they will meet them before the course starts.

Content: core diving skills, rescue management, underwater navigation, physiology and decompression theory, diving law, equipment, scientific diving standards, core biological and archaeological techniques, dive project planning and supervision, small boat handling, full face masks and communications, site survey and setup, lift bags and airlifts, and photography and videography.

Assessment: a dive project and written report, plus a diving skills and theory evaluation.

Award: a Professional Diploma in Scientific Diving, after which graduates may apply to STOY for recognition at European scientific diving levels. Certificates issued along the way include DAN O₂ and First Aid Provider, The Human Diver Level 0, SDI Rescue Diver and SDI Full Face Mask.

Price and dates: €3,400 plus VAT, covering training, certificates, diving activities, specialist equipment and examination. Accommodation and food at the station are extra, and participants supply their own basic diving equipment. Two courses are published for 2027 — 10 May to 23 June and 23 August to 6 October, each running around six to seven weeks — with an application deadline of 13 January 2027 and selected candidates announced in early February. Spots may remain available after the deadline for applicants who already meet the prerequisites.

The wider programme list

Alongside the occupational diploma, the academy lists: Foundations on Scientific Diving, European Scientific Diver and European Scientific Diver, Gozo, Polar Scientific Diving, CCR Scientific Diver, Twinset Training, Baltic Sea Macrophyte and Algae ID, and an Underwater Multimedia and Outreach Specialist Program.

Two further programmes are run on request: Basic / Citizen Science Diver, introducing students and divers to the basic underwater skills research scientists use for conservation, monitoring and citizen science projects; and Full Face Mask, covering basic full face mask use, underwater communications and tether lines for scientific diving.

The Polar Scientific Diving programme is the one that has drawn international press — training researchers to work under ice as warming changes the Arctic and Antarctic. Under-ice diving is a specialist, tethered, closely supervised discipline, and there are very few places in Europe that teach it to an occupational standard.

Funding

The Onni Talas Foundation offers scholarships for students enrolled at any Finnish university to take entry-level dive training towards scientific diving. The academy also publishes a grants page for attending scientific diving courses.

Why it matters for commercial and saturation divers

Scientific diving is a real career route that almost nobody explains properly next to commercial diving. It is occupational, it is certificated, it is paid, and the entry route is completely different: you come in through a degree and a logbook rather than through an HSE or IMCA-recognised commercial course. Divers researching how to work underwater professionally deserve to see both paths side by side, and an academy attached to a university research station with a published syllabus, price and assessment is about as transparent as this corner of the industry gets.

Frequently asked questions

What is scientific diving?

Diving used as a research method — surveys, sampling, monitoring, archaeology — under an occupational framework. In most of Europe it is legally occupational diving, but it is governed by scientific diving standards rather than commercial diving regulations, and the training covers research techniques that a commercial course does not.

What does the Occupational Scientific Diver course cost?

€3,400 plus VAT, covering training, certificates, diving activities, specialist equipment and examination. Accommodation and food at the station are extra, and you bring your own basic diving equipment.

What are the entry requirements?

Minimum age 18; Advanced Open Water, CMAS 2* or equivalent; 30 logged dives with proof; at least 15 dry-suit dives with proof; and a bachelor's degree or enrolment in a relevant field, or involvement with a scientific organisation.

Is the qualification recognised outside Finland?

Graduates receive a Professional Diploma in Scientific Diving and may then apply to STOY for recognition at European scientific diving levels. The academy states that it trains Finnish and overseas participants to European levels of certification.

Does the academy teach under-ice diving?

Yes — Polar Scientific Diving is one of its listed specific programmes, and it is one of the reasons the academy has attracted international attention.

Who do I contact?

Erik Wurz, Ph.D., the Finnish Scientific Diving Academy coordinator. Registration and information requests go through him via the Tvärminne Zoological Station pages on the University of Helsinki website.
