Not the regulators themselves — the intermediate-pressure gauges, magnehelic test stands, inline adjusting tools, bench fixtures, O-ring tools, cylinder tumblers and air supply rigs that a service centre needs to do the work properly and prove it was done properly.

The company puts the case plainly on its own site: “The job of servicing and repairing life support equipment is a vital part of the diving industry. This profession requires a commitment to constant education in order to keep pace with the development of new products.” Its stated customers range from the largest diving equipment manufacturers down to individual scuba repair technicians worldwide.

Scuba Tools was formerly known as Peter Built Co. It describes 80% of its tools as designed, manufactured and assembled in house, from raw materials to finished product — what it calls “full scope manufacturing” — arguing that complete control over the final product is what justifies the added expense of short-run production.

Full face masks are standard kit in surface-supplied and contaminated-water work, and the servicing of them is exactly the kind of task where an improvised bench setup is not good enough.
